Can you imagine a day without water? This national campaign asks just that
According to the National Institutes of Health, a person can survive without water for only about 3 days. This indispensable resource plays an enormous role in each of our lives, and without it, we’d cease to exist.
Matthew Rihs is the Commuter Services Manager for the Florida Governmental Utility Authority (FGUA), which owns and operates close to 100 water and wastewater systems across the state.
“Imagine a Day Without Water is a campaign for people and residents around the country, and especially in the Tampa Bay area, to understand where their water comes from, but also to understand that water is a very valuable, precious resource.”
“Water is important because it’s in almost everything that we have. We need it every day for our own personal health and well-being. And it’s really important to ensure we retain it because we have a limited resource of water and there’s only so much of it to go around,” said Rihs.
The annual campaign is on Thursday, October 16th and is an initiative of The Value of Water program, staffed by the US Water Alliance.
Personal well-being isn’t the only area that affected by the loss of water.
Rihs adds that a lack of this resource could be devastating for public health and safety, as it would limit the abilities of medical personnel and first responders during crises.
“As we’ve all experienced during a hurricane, you can be without the water services that are available, and how critical it is for everyday well-being as a society,” said Rihs.
Farming and agriculture in the US would also be affected, as they use a considerable amount of ground and surface water. Without it, issues would arise for a range of industrial processes, support functions, and facility operations.
Along with the campaign, the FGUA also has a educational portal available on their website for anyone who would like to learn more about water preservation.
