Eyelash extensions are designed to make you look effortlessly put together—even without wearing any makeup. At Bonded Lash Bar, many of our clients love waking up with full, beautiful lashes that instantly enhance their eyes.
One of the most common questions we hear at our Fair Lawn and Fairfield, New Jersey locations is: Can I still wear makeup with eyelash extensions?
The answer is yes. You can absolutely wear makeup with lash extensions. However, the products you use and the way you apply them can affect how long your lashes last. If you want your extensions to stay full, fluffy, and beautiful until your refill appointment, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
One of the biggest factors that affects lash retention is oil. Oil-based products can break down the lash adhesive that holds your extensions in place. When the adhesive weakens, your extensions may fall out earlier than expected.
To help your lashes last longer, it’s important to use oil-free makeup and skincare products, especially around the eye area. Cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup removers that contain oil can weaken the bond of the lash adhesive and shorten the life of your extensions. Opting for oil-free formulas helps maintain the strength of the adhesive and keeps your lashes looking full between appointments.
One of the best things about eyelash extensions is that most clients find they no longer need mascara. A professionally applied lash set already provides the length, curl, and fullness that mascara normally creates.
If you still prefer to wear mascara, it’s best to apply it only to the bottom lashes. Many clients find this provides enough definition without interfering with their extensions. If you decide to use mascara on your upper lashes, make sure it is an oil-free formula specifically safe for lash extensions.
Waterproof makeup may seem convenient, but it can be problematic when you have eyelash extensions. Waterproof formulas are difficult to remove and usually require oil-based removers.
Because oil breaks down lash adhesive, removing waterproof makeup can cause your extensions to loosen and shed prematurely. For this reason, it’s best to stick with regular, oil-free makeup formulas that can be easily removed without harsh rubbing or oil-based products.
Eyelash extensions already have a built-in curl designed to enhance your natural lashes. Using an eyelash curler is unnecessary and can actually damage the extensions.
Curlers can pull at the lash line, bend the extensions, or weaken the adhesive bond. Instead, embrace the natural curl and lift that your lash extensions provide.
When wearing eyelash extensions, it’s important to be mindful during your makeup routine. Applying makeup too aggressively around the eyes can weaken the bond and cause lashes to shed faster.
When applying eyeshadow, gently blend from your eyelid toward the brow bone using soft sweeping motions. Avoid pressing brushes directly against the lash line. Gentle application helps minimize wear and tear on the extensions and keeps them looking fresh.
Maintaining your lash extensions is simple but important. Brushing your lashes daily helps keep them neat and fluffy.
Using a clean lash spoolie brush, gently comb through your lashes each day to prevent them from crossing over each other. This small step keeps your extensions looking full, aligned, and freshly applied.
One of the biggest benefits of eyelash extensions is the ability to simplify your beauty routine while still looking polished. Lash extensions give you fuller, darker, and longer lashes without needing daily mascara or curling.
