Jesus has been giving these disciples a series of lessons on faith and now decides to test them to see if they are getting it. So, He initiates a trip across the Sea of Galilee and a terrifying storm comes and they think He said "let's go to the middle of the lake and drown". So they failed the hearing test but Jesus calms the waves and the winds and now they are more afraid because the sea and the winds obeyed Him.
