Ryan James Wedding, born in 1981 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, lived a life of two extremes, moving from the prestige of the Olympic Games to the top of the FBI's most wanted list. In 2002, he represented Canada as a snowboarder at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, finishing 24th in the parallel giant slalom. However, his life took a dark turn shortly after his sports career ended.Following a 2010 conviction for drug conspiracy, Wedding was released from prison in 2011 and allegedly established what became known as the Wedding Criminal Enterprise. This organization grew into a massive transnational drug trafficking network, eventually becoming the largest supplier of cocaine to Canada. Operating out of Mexico under the protection of the Sinaloa Cartel, Wedding oversaw an operation that trafficked approximately 60 metric tons of cocaine a year, generating more than one billion dollars in illegal proceeds. His network sourced drugs from Colombia, moved them through Mexico into Southern California hubs, and then distributed them throughout North America.Wedding was not just a coordinator of logistics; he was also known for his ruthlessness. He is accused of orchestrating multiple murders to protect his business and silence potential witnesses. One of the most tragic incidents linked to his orders occurred in November 2023 in Caledon, Ontario, where an innocent couple was mistakenly targeted and killed in retaliation for a stolen drug shipment. He is also charged with ordering the execution of a federal witness in Medellin, Colombia, in January 2025.His criminal activities led the FBI to add him to their Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in March 2025. To avoid capture, he used aliases like El Jefe and Giant and reportedly altered his physical appearance. The U.S. government placed a fifteen million dollar bounty on his head, one of the largest rewards ever offered for such a fugitive. The international investigation into his enterprise, titled Operation Giant Slalom, eventually led to the arrest of 36 people, including his high-ranking associates and his lawyer, who was accused of assisting in his violent schemes. Wedding’s time as a fugitive finally came to an end on January 22, 2026, when he was captured in Mexico City. He was then transported to the United States to face justice for charges including leading a continuing criminal enterprise, drug trafficking, and murder. Law enforcement officials have stated that his arrest makes communities in both the United States and Canada much safer, marking the fall of a man they described as a modern-day equivalent to Pablo Escobar.
