What is a jig used for in fishing?

Jigs are intended to create a jerky, vertical "jumping" motion to attract fish, as opposed to other typical lures like swimbaits, spoons and spinnerbaits, which move through the water more or less horizontally. The jig is versatile and can be used in salt and fresh water.

Jigs can be tipped with live bait or teamed with plastics to catch pretty much any fish that swims. Looking at the jig head, you can make the statement that it is one of the most versatile delivery systems known to anglers.
