A Revolutionary Sensation!
Captain Death is a fun, fresh, and intelligent take on the old historical novel genre. The work's hero is Clancy, an ex-pirate who has fallen on hard-times and a bad marriage. Despite being a bit of a screw-up, Clancy has managed to strike up an acquaintance with nearly every major figure of the late 18th Century, from Mozart to Thomas Jefferson. Early in the novel he renews his acquaintance with the aptly-named Rafe Nader, Maritime Crusader of Social Justice. Clancy then embarks on a series of adventures that lead to encounters with Thomas Paine, George Washington, and finally, the mysterious pirate, Captain Death. This book was a joy to read! Not only is a joy to read- not only is a joy to read it is historically accurate. The author represents the major players of the day not as demi-gods, but as actual people-warts and all, slaves and all. This book is completely free from the ra-ra Patriotic propaganda that gives Rev-War novels a bad name, and I highly recommend it for all lovers of history, liberty, and hilarity!
Audio Book Review: Book Maybe OK, Could Nol Listen to the Narrator
For your own sake listen to the Audble sample before downloading the Audible version. If you can stand the narration for nearly 8 hours then you may be good to go. I was only able to listen to it for about 15 minutes. It is read in this over the top, pseudo stage pirate "Argh, me hearties, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" voice that did not let up for the first fifteen minutes and I kind of suspect goes on for the entire length of the book. I returned it (which is why I don't have an AVP badge on this review.
This may be an entertaining book and I may give it a shot as an ebook, but I just couldn't listen to it as a audible book.
