Thomas Ward Custer was born on March 15, 1845, in New Rumley Ohio. On September 2, 1861, sixteen-year-old Thomas Custer lied about his age and enlisted in the Union Army’s 21st Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the early campaigns of the Civil War. On April 3, 1865 at the Battle of Namozine Church in Virginia, Custer led the charge against an enemy barricade, which disrupted the Confederate position and contributed to a crucial Union victory.

On June 25, 1876, Thomas Custer met his demise alongside his brother General George A. Custer, his younger brother, Boston Custer (a civilian guide), and his brother-in-law, First Lieutenant James Calhoun, at the Battle of Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory. Listen to his story, here...
