Publisher's Summary:
Rollie Waters is the smartest guy in any room. He knows all the angles, and hes never fewer than two steps ahead of trouble - a skill he learned from the con-artist father who raised him, though he hasnt seen him in years. Like his father, Dan, Rollie knows how to offer cheap gifts with one hand while stealing the family silver with the other. But unlike Dan, Rollie is not a criminal.
Rollies childhood was a mesh of perfectly believable lies stretched so thin that he barely knows who he is. Its only when hes working undercover as a Marine, inhabiting a false identity, that Rollie is comfortable in his own skin. The danger of deep undercover work makes use of his talents and keeps him out of trouble. Most of the time.
After hes yanked out of his latest assignment and tossed in the brig, hes only partly surprised when the officials in charge mention one name: Dan Waters. U.S. government money - a lot of money - has gone missing, and they think Rollies father took it. The only way to find Dan is to trace the frail tendrils of truth scattered among Rollies childhood memories. To do that, hell have to go deep into the undercover identity of a lifetime: his own.

More, please!
It is not often you find a first novel with great plot, strong compelling characters and writing that leaps off the page. But that is just what David Rich has accomplished in this fine book. Rich's writing is lean and tight and he deftly avoids the pitfall of sentimental claptrap while exploring the complex relationship that Rollie has with his father. Rollie is drawn like the best characters out of Raymond Chandler, covering some of the same geographic turf that Chandler did so well so long ago. Critic Robert Moss said of Chandler's "The Big Sleep": "The story is structurally and thematically unified, the characters fully developed, and the style distinctive and sharp." That applies perfectly to "Caravan of Thieves". I'm a big fan of both Chandler and Michael Connelly - Rich's book belongs in the company of their best. More, please, David!!!

It's a must read
I hope he writes more books. Loved every minute of it. Reminds me a little of Lee Childs, and I've read every one of his.
Nice set up for a series character
A strong first effort. Nice set up for a series character.
Picaresque Marine
Mr Rich has created a very intriguing picaresque character that is the star of this appealing novel. Rollie Waters is a marine working as an undercover agent in Afghanistan. His background includes a childhood with a father who has taught him how to lie, cheat and gain things he wants via being a con artist. As a consequence of this background Rollie is most comfortable working under cover utilizing identities other than his own.
Unexpectedly while working undercover in the field he is seized by his own command and thrown into the brig. It is indicated that his father, Dan Waters, has stolen a great deal of money while in Iraq. Rollie is told that he is responsible for finding his father, and returning the money to the general in charge of his unit.
