When Major Charles Davenport is evacuated to England to recuperate from a battle wound received at Tobruk, a letter is awaiting him from his wife in London, informing him that she wants a divorce.
Mary Kennedy is a young Irish American who has moved to her grandparents cottage in Ireland to mourn the loss of her husband and child. Participating in a Red Cross morale-building effort, she corresponds with a young British soldier, but his letters cease abruptly.
Determined to learn what has become of him, she makes her way to the army hospital in Sussex, where she meets his commanding officer, Major Davenport. Thus begins a love story carried out almost entirely by letter, set against the dramatic events of WWII.

Books of War
This year 2015 we are being deluged with books of War, in particular the First World War. This one is a little different than most, as it follows the stories of the Irish mostly non-involvement, the resentment of the British involvement & the work of the IRA in actually working for Hitler. It is a well-written story that tugs at the heartstrings at times. At some stages one is wondering just who is on which side - who are the spies, and who are not. The prudishness of the time also comes across, such as when American Irish Mary plans to meet with her British Officer friend for a weekend, staying in separate rooms but still under close scrutiny & disapproval by hotel staff & other guests.
They were also urgent times, trying to catch brief moments together with the perils of war always there ready to snatch your loved one away.
I thought the ending came rather abruptly & left me wanting more. It is a book I would recommend especially to those who like historical fiction.
Highly recommended
John Kerr has woven many strands of the real events of World War Two into a well-paced narrative, yet never lets the historical overshadow the fictional. Without becoming mired in explanation and exposition, he keeps the personal romantic story front and center yet still grounded in fact. Maintaining that balance is one of the most difficult things to manage in historical fiction and he carries it out very well.
Very pleasurable reading and highly recommended.

A good story that held my interest. I enjoyed the book and was sorry to see it end.
Cardigan Bay: WW II in Ireland
This historical fiction gave me insights into the conflicting feelings
in Ireland during WW II, of which I was not aware.
I really enjoyed the book, and reccommended it with
confidence to my library friends.
