Yvonne Carter is a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon. After graduating from high school early, she attended the University of California Berkeley where she majored in Physiology. She went on to receive her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. After completing her general surgery residency training at the University of Washington, she went on to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery completing fellowships in both general thoracic surgery and thoracic transplant surgery at the University of California San Francisco and Duke University, respectively. Her clinical interests are in minimally invasive thoracic surgery approaches, mediastinal tumors, and lung cancer, while her academic interests are focused on gender, race, and socioeconomic based disparities in thoracic oncology.
Outside of work, Yvonne is an accomplished athlete. She is a former All-American duathlete, having representing Team USA in multiple world championships and several podium finishes at PowerMan events. She is an avid runner, with a personal best time of 3 hours 9 minutes in the 2018 New York City marathon. She is also the top female finisher in the Cayman Islands marathon for the past two years. In 2018 she participated in her first triathlon, participating in Ironman Hawaii 70.3. With her athletic endeavors, she is an ambassador for SOAS Racing and Skratch Labs. She now has her eyes set on a 3-hour marathon, 5 hour half-ironman, and a three-peat in the Cayman Islands marathon all while continuing caring for and being a champion for her patients!
