On Episode 21 of Carmichael Clan Radio, I’m joined by one of the founding members of Clan Carmichael USA, Arthur Carmichael.
Arthur (or “Art” as he’s known to most) is one of the most visible and respected members of Clan Carmichael USA. On the show, we talk about how he first became involved in Clan Carmichael when few in the United States had even heard of Clan Carmichael. We also learn about Arthur’s role in the creation of the Clan Carmichael Honor Guard and what its role has been to Chief Richard since its inception. Later we talk about how the Carmichael Gatherings in Scotland have changed over the years, and then hear what Arthur’s hopes are for Clan Carmichael USA as it moves into the future.
This was such an interesting interview, and a reminder of how many fascinating Clan Carmichael stories are still out there, waiting to be told.

It’s the spookiest season of the year, and today I’m joined by co-host of the Generally Spooky History Podcast, Eilidh MacRae, to talk about Scotland’s very spooky past. Eilidh and her husband Kieran are hosts of the Generally Spooky History Podcast where they deliver a different spooky Scottish tale each week.
In this episode, we discuss a few theories about why Scotland might have such a haunted history, then Eilidh treats us to several eerie stories of hauntings and spirits — even one that is local to South Lanarkshire, just up the road from the Carmichael Estate.
Other topics we dare to talk about are the frightening Nuckelavee, the horse-like demon of Orcadian folklore, and the location frequently called the “most haunted place in Scotland,” Mary King’s Close.
Thanks so much to Eilidh for joining Carmichael Clan Radio on this special Halloween episode. To hear more about Scotlands’ haunted history, check out the Generally Spooky History Podcast by following the links below.

On today’s episode, I’m joined by educator, author, researcher, and whisky historian, Dr. Kieran German. Dr. German isn’t only a whisky historian, though; he also specializes in the Jacobite movement in Scotland and Britain — but as you’ll soon discover, his passion lies in exploring the history of Scotland through whisky.
On the show we cover a host of different topics, such as the history of whisky distilling in Scotland, and what factors make Scotland an ideal place for whisky production. Other topics include exploring the unique qualities offered by each of the well-known distilling regions in Scotland; the illicit stills that once were hidden inside the homes and farms across the country; Dr. German’s top whisky recommendations; and we also get his advice on how to best enjoy a dram — plus lots more.

TOUT JOUR PREST!
On today’s special episode, we’re finally able to let all of you in on what has been a closely-held secret in Clan Carmichael for the past several months.
After having Andrew Carmichael as a guest on the podcast in January to talk about the 2023 Carmichael Gathering being held June 18-22, Clan Carmichael USA and Clan Carmichael International had the idea that something should be done to commemorate this important gathering, as it is the 40th anniversary of the first Carmichael Gathering in 1983.
After putting our heads together, Clan Carmichael International and Clan Carmichael USA decided that a commemorative print featuring Chief Richard would be the perfect way to pay tribute to both the 40th Anniversary of the gathering, but also to Chief Richard for his steadfast leadership over the past four decades.
The result is beautiful, limited-edition print designed by Scottish artist and author Katie Carmichael, and on today’s show I’m joined by Andrew Carmichael and Katie Carmichael to talk all about the print. Listen to learn much more about the print!
As some of you may have already seen, Chief Richard was presented with copy number one of the signed and numbered prints at the Carmichael gathering earlier today, and now is your chance to purchase your copy. Each of the 150 copies are signed and numbered by Katie Carmichael, and once these are gone, they’ll never be printed again - so be sure to get yours before they’re gone.
Prints can be purchased at the link below, or by visiting the Clan Carmichael USA website and clicking on the link on the homepage. Prints will be available for purchase the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Stone Mountain Highland Games — assuming there are copies still available at that time.

On today’s show, I’m joined by photographer and keynote speaker, Jon Carmichael.
As you’ll hear on the show, Jon’s path into photography came almost by accident and he learned and perfected his craft with no formal training. In fact, for years Jon had never even printed a single photo, but through a series of serendipitous events found himself in the home of Sir Elton John seeing his printed photos for the first time ever.
Jon is best known for his large cosmic photographic mosaics, but received international acclaim after releasing his photo titled “108” of the 2017 Great American Eclipse, which he captured from a Southwest Airlines commercial flight he had carefully chosen because of its optimal flight path. “108” also played a decisive role in Jon’s journey into keynote speaking when he found himself delivering his first speech to over 5,000 Twitter employees after the last-minute cancellation of Elon Musk. Jon has since given speeches at TEDx and NASA where he speaks on the power of curiosity, passion, and perseverance. Jon has worked with Southwest Airlines, Twitter, Dell, ESPN, and with President Obama, the Dalia Lama, and many others along the way.

On today’s show, I’m joined by the Rt. Hon. Alistair Carmichael — a member of the House of Commons since 2001, representing the Orkney and Shetland Islands.
Mr. Carmichael was kind enough to join me from his office in London this week to talk for over an hour. In this episode, we discuss a host of topics including: what was like growing up on Islay; what guides his decision-making process as a Member of Parliament; lessons learned while working in the hotel and restaurant industry; why a person should aspire to be in politics today; and some really important topics, too, like Mr. Carmichael’s Scotch whisky recommendations!
This show was so much fun to record, and I am grateful for Mr. Carmichael taking the time out of his busy schedule to chat. With responsibilities like representing his constituents in Parliament, it’s nice that Mr. Carmichael will still make time to check in with other Carmichaels from across the globe.

With National Tartan Day right around the corner, I am excited to release the second episode in my two-part series dedicated to exploring the history and significance of the Declaration of Arbroath.
I was joined this week by Professor Dauvit Broun of the University of Glasgow, and Professor Ewen Cameron of the University of Edinburgh for a history roundtable. These two professors each are highly respected and are among the leading scholars of Scottish history, so I was honored and thrilled when they both agreed to an interview. This episode was lots of fun to record and I hope you find it interesting and insightful.
A few topics discussed include: a review of the history behind the letter written to Pope John XXII in 1320 on behalf of the Scottish barons — now commonly known as the Declaration of Arbroath; why the letter was written and what the barons and King Robert I hoped it would achieve; its effects on modern-day politics and political thought; how modern political parties use the document today; and where, if anywhere, it belongs among the most influential historical political documents throughout history.
Thanks so much to Dr. Dauvit Broun and Dr. Ewen Cameron for taking the time to talk with me about this really interesting historical document.
(Click here to listen to the first of the two-part series on the Declaration of Arbroath with Dr. Laura Harrison.)

I’m happy to be joined this week by one of Clan Carmichael USA’s finest: “Lantana John” Carmichael. John has been a member of Clan Carmichael USA for nearly thirty years. Over that time, he has been involved as a board member, newsletter editor, committee chair for Clan Carmichael products, and widely recognized as the unofficial Clan Carmichael USA genealogist.
In this episode, John tells me about the unlikely way he discovered Clan Carmichael, the surprise dinner guest that joined him for a meal during his first trip to Scotland, what he found in the Dallas library that sparked his love for genealogy, and talks about how Clan Carmichael USA has evolved over the years and where he sees it going in the future.
It was a real pleasure to get to spend some time with John and getting to hear about some of his favorite memories of Clan Carmichael over the years. The episodes of Carmichael Clan Radio where I get to interview longtime members are actually the reason I started Carmichael Clan Radio, and I’m extremely grateful for the work that these members have put in over the years to establish and keep Clan Carmichael USA alive and thriving.
Click here to see the result of years of John’s research — a 911-page book on Carmichael genealogy.
(NOTE: Many thanks to Blair Carmichael for reaching out and offering to help with the sound engineering of Carmichael Clan Radio. I truly appreciate your willingness to help to improve the overall quality of the show — Tour Jour Prest!)
