The I in Us

Carolyn Hannaford

The I in Us is an Australian-based radio show about the intersex community, by the intersex community, for everyone.

On this week’s show, Paul welcomed Carolyn (CJ) Hannaford, an intersex woman from South Australia to the JOY 94.9 airwaves.

Born in 1952, CJ grew up in an era of secrecy, shame and ignorance about her Intersex variation. CJ says that she may as well have been a dinosaur for the oddity she perceived herself to be, and it wasn’t until the age of 19 years that CJ finally learned she is intersex, in a most unexpected and confronting way.

CJ has been an intersex advocate in Australia for many years, including being the South Australian, Western Australian and Northern Territory Peer Support Rep for Intersex Peer Support Australia.

On Wednesday 13 November 2024 CJ delivered the South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance (SARAA) Ian Purcell Oration at the Adelaide Feast Festival, South Australia’s Annual Arts and Cultural Festival – with a talk titled, “Were There Intersex Dinosaurs?”

Please join us as we unpack CJ’s oration and her intersex story.

Tune into JOY 94.9 Wednesday’s at 6pm for another exciting episode of The I in Us.
