January 1, 1969. The People's Democracy set out on a march from Belfast to Derry. Their confrontation with unionists at Burntollet Bridge three days later was one of the many sparks that ignited The Troubles in the late 1960s, a series of violent conflicts that spanned decades in Northern Ireland.
