Fringe History

Case 19, Mercy Lena Brown, Americas Last Vampire

Listen Later

Have you heard of the New England Undead / Vampire panic phenomenon in the 18th Century? We are still currently finding graveyards effected by this mass hysteria where bodies were exhumed in a monster hunt lead by superstitious religious folk, sometimes making tonics of the bodies organs. The Last “Vampire” to meet this fate of Lena Mercy Brown, who some called a teenage psychic Vampire.
But was she just victim to the infamous disease “consumption” & her body desecrated to calm the living from an issue they just don’t understand yet? I look to clear her name & share her remarkable quilting skills by sharing articles from the Rhode Island Historical society & the Smithsonian to figure out just what the New England Vampire phenomenon really was & its effects we still see today on this weeks Fringe History.
