While Joe Grey has played tricks on Max Harper, Molena Point's head lawman, he's never had anything but respect for the dedicated sheriff. Now Harper's in trouble, suspected of murdering two friends, and the only witness, a young girl named Dillon, has disappeared. Both Dulcie and Joe know Harper is innocent, and Joe is hissing to prove it - and find Dillon. Their sleuthing, however, is hampered by something soft and small - their new "ward," a vivacious kitten whose curiosity could get them all killed. With backs up and claws bared, Dulcie and a spitting mad Joe must use all their cleverness and amazing talents not only to find a killer, save a little girl, and clear their friend's name - but keep their secret safe, too.

Cat Just Aggravated--not really Mad
You can read the whole story in some well-intentioned spoiler's review--not here. Sometimes stories have a twist, but sometimes you can see the plot from the first chapter. I have a lot of affections for these cat cozy stories as a cat momma of five, but this is a straight shooter. It's so straight that you can smell the gunpowder. *sigh* There is very little cliffhanging because... you know what is going on...nothing surprising except maybe the very last pages where you see what one clever deputy's initiative will pay off with. (I know. They need to come up with a new modifier law for "hanging prepositions" since us renegade language law breakers keep on commuting grammar suicide.) It's got to be the hardest thing in the world to write a murder mystery series, even with talking moggies...so Miz Murphy gets a solid four. Three is ho-hum for me, which this cat ain't. (A two for me is slog, slog, halfway thru put it down in the donation pile, and get disgusted for time wasted. [It could just be not my cuppa tea, but might be yours.] A one for me is I can only force myself through the first one or two chapters, then put it down in recycling paper bin, disgusted for money wasted.)
Cat Spitting Mad - Stellar Installment in the Joe Grey Mysteries
Although published eleven years ago, Cat Spitting Mad is a wonderful example of Rousseau Murphy's fabulous writing style. The two original talking cats, Joe Grey and the beautiful Dulcie, now welcome the tortoiseshell "Kit" to their sleuthing society.
Series regulars include Clyde Damen, Joe's human companion, and of course, Molena Point police chief, Max Harper. Charlie Getz, who was once Clyde's favorite lady, now favors Max, although the cats and humans all remain best friends and look out for each other in this California seaside town. The detective cats band with their humans to defend Max who is accused - framed - in two murders, and the cats' wonderful sleuthing styles amaze the few in Molina Point who are aware of their sentient qualities. Here, Kate Osborne returns, the cat-human who captured my imagination in the very first book in the series.
Following the Joe Grey Mystery series is a treat everyone should taste. The characters become friends and the events in their lives become important parts of a world where magical cats exist. This book, along with the entire collection, remains in my library (now both Kindle and paperback) to re-read on one of those gloomy Oregon winter days, like today, when I need a reminder of why I love to read and am inspired to write.
