Listen Later

What do you do when you get up in the morning? What do you do when you go to work? How does garb impact your endeavors? In this podcast sound byte snippet I delve into the impact of costume upon your aspects of motivation.
Costume, garb, attire, clothing, apparel. They’re sold in retail stores and thrift shops. Sometimes they’re marketed as what “the cool” people wear. Sometimes as with extreme weather gear, clothing is marketed as fabric that assists you in surviving the elements. But really clothing is just costume and it should be. The clothing you wear has an enormous impact on your productivity.
One of the 4 focuses I emphasize in my coaching (along with career, relationships, and health) is productivity-minimalism. The two are intertwined and inextricably interrelated because as minimalism increases, so does productivity. Less clutter means less distractions. And for clothing, apparel that you wear has a bearing on what you will do with your day.
If I awake and instantly put on my running clothes, just in regards to probability, there’s a 99% chance that I’ll workout that day. Simply because of the clothing I chose. Clothing anchors in specific activities. If you awake and put on your fancy shmancy clothes, that will impact your day causing you to gravitate towards more professional projects.
The usage of something as simple as apparel can have a remarkable impact on the course of your day. Especially during lockdown and the global pandemic, be mindful of what clothing you wear during your day. When you roll out of bed and fail to be mindful of what you want to accomplish that day in regards to clothing, you will lack possession of your time. How you dress your body, effects your mind and your plans.
Your plans are important because that’s how you utilize your time. What would happen if you knew the night before that you would wake up and don your exercise clothes upon awaking the next morning before work? Your entire evaluation of time would shift. Sure, you still have work clothes, but just doing something as simple as adorning the apparel of a specific activity, gets you to accomplish that focus.
Costume is defined as “an outfit worn to create the appearance characteristic of a particular period, person, place, or thing”. When you workout or go to work or even just relax around your house, you are playing “a part”, a role. The clothing you wear effects the role you play! Beginning to become aware of how you will utilize your future time is integral to leading a fulfilling life and the clothing with which you adorn yourself does have an impact on how effectively you manage your time.
Conclusively, be selective with your costume. It’s basically free motivation inertia. The clothing you choose to dress yourself with can shape what you do with your time in the future.
