During this pandemic, the United States needs its honey bees. The USDA reports that honey bees are responsible for nearly one out of every three bites of food taken in the U.S. They also help increase the nation’s crop values by around 15 billion dollars a year. Unfortunately, one of the largest hornets in the world has arrived in the United States from Asia and it's known as the Long Asian Giant Hornet or the "Murder Hornet". This name is fitting as this matchbox-sized hornet can decimate a hive of 30,000 honey bees within several hours and multiple stings can even kill a human. In this episode, Alex discusses how these murderers must be eradicated, as they could potentially cause an awful tipping point in a honey bee population that is already significantly in decline. He also worries that these murderers could only worsen the food supply issues in the United States. Will this infestation of the “Murder Hornet” wake Americans up to the fact that nature is fragile and that bees are a necessary part of their lives?
