When I went to grad school I was assigned a mentor who’s name had more syllables than anyone I’d ever met. In a new city, not knowing a soul, I really wanted to be connected with someone more like me. Sixteen years later she has become one of the best friends I’ve ever had and we have more in common than I could have ever imagined. We still trade stories about our brothers, among others things but I wasn’t quite ready for this update.
