In spring 2014, Bobby Broughman, 75, of Covington, Va., came to Carilion Clinic with a failing mitral valve. It had been implanted 15 years earlier during open-heart surgery. Unfortunately, Mr. Broughman was not able to undergo open-heart surgery again, so the cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons at Carilion Clinic had to figure out another way to treat him. After research, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Joespeh Rowe III, M.D., and team decided a non-traditional approach to mitral valve replacement was the best bet for Mr. Broughman. This video details the procedure and showcases how well Mr. Broughman is now doing.
