Jesus plus is always Jesus minus. Paul continues to reinforce this in a world where alternatives and counterfeits to Jesus were as common as they continue to be today. The only appropriate response is a true understanding of who Jesus is.

1. Jesus' Resurrection is the answer to the problem of human mortality.

2. Ignorance is not a Christian virtue.

3. A good thing becomes a bad thing when it's used to replace or invalidate the best possible thing.

The Apostle John makes the case for evangelism as one centered on and motivated by the person of Jesus Christ. If we have anything better to share with people, we should share it. Until then, stick with Him.

1. Every meaningful conversation about Jesus should focus on Jesus.

2. God wants us to know for certain that He loves us and we belong to Him.

3. You aren't responsible for how people respond to the Gospel. Only how graciously you present it.

Paul concludes his letter to Thessalonica by reminding them that lazy people and freeloaders shouldn't expect to see what God intends for the Christian life. Instead, follow his work ethic of serving like Christ served.

1. The Church isn't for lazy people or freeloaders.

2. If you aren't seeing action, get in the game.

3. Prayer should be a priority for every believer.

John makes his case for the assurance we have in the promises of God based on who Jesus truly is. A false version can't save anyone, but the real deal has given us every reason to trust His promise to save us.

1. A fake god can't save you.

2. There are things we don't understand about creation. The Creator is allowed to be at least that complicated.

3. God's promises are trustworthy because He's proven His character.

John concludes his theme about the love of God by making it the crossroads between a genuine believer and hypocritical one. Apart from a miracle, we can't love like Jesus does. The miracle of salvation is that we will can be a witness through love... or an argument against it.

1. God's Love isn't easy. Only He can do it.

2. The cure for hypocrisy in the church is not to be one.

3. Calling yourself a Christian is meaningless unless you act like Christ.

3. Truth doesn't sneak.

Ezra and those who followed him from Babylon saw the work of God fulfilled. In response to this fulfilled promise of God, they did what we all should do when we see those things fulfilled. They said thank you. They prayed. They took the time to draw closer to God and distance themselves from the things of this world.

1. Thankfulness is recognizing something in our lives as good.

2. Take the time to remember how God has come through for you before so you don’t forget the next time you need to trust Him.

3. With God, the best is always yet to come.

John describes our love-based relationship with God as centered around His Work, His promises, and His Presence in our lives. The Holy Spirit has entered the hearts of those who believe in the Son whom the Father sent. We recognize His presence through His ongoing work in making us more like Jesus in our character.

1. We know God through how He’s revealed Himself in His Word.

2. We have assurance of salvation because of His promises and continued work in our lives.

3. The Holy Spirit’s goal in our lives is to make us like Jesus in our character.
