Talking with Tata

Celebrate Creativity with Smocked Art’s Rachel Silver

Listen Later

Sensory play is a lot of fun. It offers many benefits for child development including motor skills, emotional regulation and supports brain development. Smocked Art founder Rachel Silver served as an elementary art teacher in Miami for eight years before starting Smocked in 2020 during the Covid pandemic as a way to stimulate and engage her two young daughters. She has since built a curriculum of classes - from newborn to toddlers and their caregivers - that include thematic art activities each week using play dough and safe ingredients like beans, flour, cereal and water. She explains the importance of sensory exposure at an early age and how she designs her classes to help children socialize, engage in art making, and learn valuable skills for the future.

Tata’s Tip of the Week: Importance of Sensory Play

Start at a young age and stimulate your child with sensory play. Create sensory bins and use ingredients like rice, beans, flour, sand to expose your child to different textures and expands on their senses.
