This is part 2 of my Vietnam experience. In this episode, we focus on the undeniability of the Vietnamese people. I am inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit when it stares directly into the eye of adversity. We spent some time in a home-stay in Tam Coc. This was our attempt at living like a local and experiencing daily life in this farming village. We got hit by a typhoon in Phu Quac and I took one for the team on a dilapidated bicycle to ensure my wife had clean clothes. I have shared my philosophy and tips regarding "sharpening the blade" in the past. Many of you have integrated these techniques in your life when the shit hits the fan or you have run yourself into the ground. I think a regularly scheduled sharpening is a much better strategy. A chef doesn't need to cut off their finger while cutting a tomato to recognize the need for a sharper knife. I have some new techniques that I include in my daily routine and add to my quarterly reset where I sharpen all the knives in my knife drawer. Why is it that you can remember shanking it on the 17th hole at the Players Championship 3 years ago but can't remember what you had for lunch 3 days ago? Memories are deepened when we attach emotion to them. Positive or negative, our emotions add stickiness to our past. This can be a problem when we allow these emotionally charged memories to affect our future. The secret to maximizing your performance is to reframe the negative memories and turn them into positives! You are not your thoughts and your thoughts are not you. Your thoughts, however, dictate your actions. Your actions create habits and your habits create the person you are. As Nick Cannon famously said, "You are what you consistently do." I think it was Nick that said that while signing his 17th kid's birth certificate? Ill check on that quote and get back to you. Most people avoid pain and suffering at any cost. Others chase it! Skin your knee skateboarding? You either quit or you climb back up the staircase and give that rail another try. Stand in front of 150 drunk comedy fans and bomb? Normal, psychologically balanced individuals would walk off with their tail between their legs, never to grace the stage again. But a comic has a different reaction. There is a dark hole inside them that needs to be filled. Like the adrenalin rush of landing a 12-stair backside smith grind, landing a joke briefly quenches the comedian's thirst for killing on stage.
