Change Your Story, Change Your Life

If you think about any story that has inspired you, offered you critical insight or shaped you in some meaningful way, it was basically about a protagonist who faced and overcame a series of challenges, and in resolving them, transforms himself or herself.

But what about you?  What’s your story?  What are you willing to struggle for? To strive for?  What adversity have you had to face and overcome that has brought you to where you are in life?  That has helped to create the person you are today?  Stories are critical to help us understand ourselves, the world around us and how we fit into it.

The problem is that our narratives are being fragmented at the moment, resulting in an individual as well as societal identity crisis.  When we lose sight of what is meaningful to us, the purpose we choose to pursue and the strengths we possess, we become anxious and reactive.

This threatens our happiness because it disconnects us from others.  When we don’t know what our story is, narratives that seem in conflict with our own elevate our feelings of uncertainty, closing us off from vulnerability.  We are offended by differences, consumed by trivialities and lead by our entitlements.

But when we are secure in who we are, what we are capable of and especially what we value, we are more likely to build bridges than barriers.  We are more open to expanding, even challenging our world view.  Perhaps most importantly, we discover that what we want for ourselves is what we want for others as well.

My guest for this episode is Clint Davis, former radio host, podcaster and Founder and CEO of Capsll, a company that uses our stories to connect us to our past, our humanity and each other.  This conversation was insightful, and at times rather provocative.  We need to share our stories, and seek out dialogue, even when it’s uncomfortable.   More accurately, especially when it’s uncomfortable.  We need to be willing to see others if we want to be seen and understood ourselves.  The world is changing rapidly.  It seems to be getting more complex daily.  What has brought us to where we are right now may be insufficient to help us successfully arrive at wherever we are heading.  If the future is to be promising for any of us, it will likely require all of us.

Enjoy
