Welcome back to The smashes system podcasts. I’m Nino Prodan. This week, I want to talk a little about how to change gears from what you’ve been used to, to what’s currently happening. And this applies to life in general, not just during the coronavirus. And there’s one thing I like to tell my coaching clients and that’s that there’s definitely one constant in life. And that’s change as much as people fight it, no matter what. things always change. It’s the nature of the universe. And it creates a dilemma in us because our brains innately hate change. Our brains love habits. Our brains love doing the same thing over and over again. Yeah, maybe a little variety, but for the most part, they like to stick inside the confines of what is expected. And the reason is, our brains use a lot of energy. They use 20% of the calories we burn daily. So as we evolved, there wasn’t always a surplus of calories, we couldn’t go to the grocery store and pick up a whole bunch of food or venture down the street to fast food chain. Calories were hard to come by, we had to catch our food, or we had to pick it off the trees off of plants. We didn’t even have farms. So our brains are programmed to conserve energy where they can. And adapting the change makes our brains use more energy than normal. Because we have to create new habits and solve new problems. And unless it’s forced on your brain, you don’t want to do it. You want to do everything you can to avoid doing that. And your brain will trick you into doing that by telling you stories, stories of how it’s impossible or how it’s so difficult. So then you don’t do it. And your brain can relax and continue to conserve energy. So one way to adapt to this constant change that happens in our lives is not to Expect the environment to be the same, and not even expect you to be the same. But to create an outlook on life on the world, that’s the same, to create mental fortitude and resilience within yourself, to learn to trust, your ability to adapt, to change, to know that when the shit hits the fan, that you’ll be able to figure it out. You have that ability, and to do it, you have to start by telling yourself that you can trust yourself. You got to start telling yourself that all the stories that you’re hearing about things going bad, or how bad it can be, stop exposing yourself to the stories that tell you about everything that can go wrong, and start telling yourself stories about what can go right. Start to ground yourself in gratitude, and set reminders for yourself. Create habits for yourself, to practice that gratitude because gratitude was Found to rewire the brain so that you can control where your attention goes. You can control what you do when the shit does hit the fan. You can control the freakout, and you can stop stress and overwhelm from overcoming you. And one easy quick way to do that is just starting off once a day writing down three things you’re grateful for. And if you write it down somewhere where you can reference it, you could even set reminders that you can look at it throughout the day, and just remind yourself that day of what you’re grateful for, for me, I used to set an hourly term and time, that way I can practice that throughout the day. And I watched as I was able to have better control of my emotions, and more focus on the things that were important for making the changes in my life and adapting to the changes that came. Make gratitude, a daily practice for you. I’m Nino Prodan, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
