In 2007, I had an opportunity to attend the Apple Pro Day event in Bangkok. One of the talk I listened to to was khun Kakorn Bhirakit's session, he was talking about workflow in Adobe's InDesign. He pointed out about the Thai-character encoding standard that was missing and caused a few headaches among the Thai publishing industry; a simple txt file could potentially gave different display, depending on which operationg system and software you were using to open it. More than 2 years went by and I managed to have a chance to talk to him. We talked at my place and he patiently explained what went wrong at the beginning and some possible solutions in the future.
