Starting a 10-day series, DMN8 Your Market in 90 Days, a step-by-step guide. It's a book I wrote in September 2019, and we're going through each chapter one per day. If there's any commentary that I'll need to do on it, I will, but, that's what this podcast is about. Today is Chapter One: Building Skills and Processes. We don't set out to own a business that fails. We don't start a relationship with the end in mind. We all want success; we just have difficulty understanding the secret to achieving it. Here's the secret... WORK! Unfortunately, starting and owning a business doesn't allow us to build the foundations of that work to be successful. Everything in life provides foundations to build upon, to achieve success. Education. We started in our early years learning how to write, spell, perform, calculations, and read so that we can use those skills later on in life to communicate, analyze, predict, and perform other activities that were built on those foundational skills. Athletics. We learn the basics of running, jumping, throwing, catching, or shooting a ball that allow us to play the sport. Owning a business is like being thrown into a fire without knowing where a water source exists or a way to access it to put the fire out. A new business owner doesn't get to deal with small problems in order to develop problem-solving skills for larger, more complex problems. You start off dealing with the complex issues immediately! Over the next couple of chapters, you will learn how to build new skills and processes or better develop ones you already possess. Take the time to practice those skills daily but practice them on your potential customers and audience. There's nothing wrong with building revenue as you're learning to develop skills. As a basketball coach, I would find tougher teams than ours to scrimmage to help my players develop their skills. Winning these scrimmages was always the goal, even if it was highly unlikely. Winning is winning! The three tenets of this book I want you to focus on following are: Developing Discipline Setting and Publishing Goals Inspiring others Develop Discipline - Much like losing weight, you have to take the first step. Begin learning new skills then implementing those skills using the provided roadmap. Setting and Publishing Goals - Set and publish your 90-day goal. Tell anyone and everyone who will listen. Inspiring Others - Show your results. Helping others WANT to achieve success. If you focus on these three tenets every day, your business will begin to evolve. Each tenant has a specific purpose to help move the needle. Developing discipline is the beginning of the journey - committing to your success before the end is known. This separates the adult from the children; women from girls and men from boys. Setting and publishing goals require you to not only create a goal to strive for, but the publishing of those goals requires you to be held accountable for the goals. This creates a greater need to develop stronger disciplines. Inspiring Others is where growth begins to occur in you as an individual. We all need "this" to be more than just about us or our little piece of the world. Inspiring Others gives us a reason to continually do this work that will help us on the path to greater growth and success. Now that we've cleared this all up, let's DMN8. You see, we have to be disciplined, we have to set and achieve goals, and we have to inspire others. The purpose of the chapter of this book is to understand those three things are what should drive you on a daily basis. Developing a discipline is about doing a skill over and over and over. Setting and publishing goals are about having a plan for a roadmap in place to get to your destination. Because if you're publishing the goal, you're holding yourself accountable by telling someone I want to do this. Inspiring others. Inspiring others allow that momentum to continue, so you can rinse and repeat. Develop discipline, set and publish goals, inspire others. You follow those three tenets on a daily basis.
