In the aftermath of the great race, Adam's fame as healer of the Queen of the Red Scythians threatens his security.  Scarus, the centurion, is assigned by the prefect to become Adam’s bodyguard, and becomes a reliable friend. Adam’s comfortable existence is interrupted by a summons to a secret meeting of notables,  assembled by Honorius. Great plans with an eye to the east are revealed. To Adam’s surprise, Axia is at the very centre of it all.
