Adam reflects on a past memory of Axia, who now speaks to the secret assembly. She vows to return to her people and retake her throne. The scholars at Alexandria reveal knowledge of the sea routes to the east, which have since become blocked by pirates. Another invitation by a powerful Indo-Parthian King is revealed.  Honorius seeks to recruit Axia and her peoples to restore the trade routes and  offers aid from the Emperor himself. Axia and the Scythians consider the offer, but she has conditions that must be met before she will accept.  Adam senses that his comfortable life in Alexandria is about to change.
