In the 20 or so years that AA was living with her condition she got to see and witness a great deal in terms of the UK health system. In some places it was a comforting and safe experience. At other times it was not.

She would visit many different specialist units all with their own unique facilities. She would travel the length and breadth of the UK in the hope of finding a place which would suit her and aid her recovery.

When it came to it though sometimes there was very little choice. You just had to take what you could get. It’s this that we discuss in Chapter 3: A Second Home.
