Willie Mitchell, a Mississippi native was more than just a trumpet player. After moving to Memphis as a teenager, this legendary musician began playing in local big band combos while still in high school. While recording a slew of his own records (1964-2008), Willie Mitchell moved into music producing, first a Hi Records and then at his own Waylo Records and Royal Studios. He worked with local legends such as Ann Peebles, and Joyce Cobb as well as internationally known artists such as Buddy Guy and 70's superstar, Al Green. After his death, his family retained ownership and control of Royal Studios with Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell at the helm. While Memphis' rich musical legacy has begun to fade into history, Royal Studios fights to remain relevant.
