I’d like to take you to Long Beach, California, just as autumn is beginning to fade. The air and ocean are indistinguishably grey and paint a bright canvas against the ocean liners docked in Long Beach Harbor. There are many ships floating here on the peninsula - some are only sleeping until summer, but only the Queen Mary is dead in the water - stationary and rusted. It is decidedly not tourist season. And yet there are plenty of cars parked here on the dock - surrounded by sleeping giants.
