The rook does not know he is a rook.

Not at first.

Not while the morning is still soft. 

The bell above the bicycle repair shop door gave its usual thin, reluctant ring as he stepped inside. He’d always thought it sounded like something being woken before it wanted to be. A creature tugged from sleep. A warning that went mostly ignored.
