Character and Courage Will Win #shorts

Listen Later

That's my grandma. Don't let the cuddliness fool you. That photo is from my 30s. But when I was 13, and moved to a new school, where I was 2 years behind in German and having to work till midnight to translate prose, and I would cry. She came into the room, looked at me and said "Show courage. What's all this crying?" I didn't expect that. I expected "it's okay, leave it, we will speak to the school, it doesn't matter".
That moment changed everything. Forever. Every time I felt overwhelmed since, I would remember her words in Gujarati - "Show courage". Character mattered more than winning and losing.
She left Kenya with 4 children to the UK in the 1960s. Her husband, my grandfather, who had been in the British Army, passed away when my Grandmother was in her 40s and her children barely working age.
Her generation knew really courage. You stand up straight. Your hair is combed, your clothes ironed. You keep calm, except in the face of injustice. Dignity first.
When I told her I plan to become a barrister, she worried people may laugh at me. I ensured she visited me on the set of my TV programmes and my speeches - so she could see laughter (with) me.
Did I ever let her down? Doesn't every grandchild at some point. But the love of a grandparent is unique among all types of love.
So how does my story end? Well, I went on to get the German prize in my GCSEs and ace it. (And the Prizes for Best Performance, and Cricket Colours). That photo, that's my home at 30, which I bought in St John's Wood on Hamilton Terrace and I've just got the letter for my Investiture from the Palace.
None of that would have mattered much to her than the things she told me that count in your life - what have you done for the poorest, those treated with injustice?
Courage and character will win the day. It's a simple lesson. The type that stays with you decades later. And that photo - it's in my office, in front of me. It's next to the one of Ali knocking out Frazer - I kid you not.
We must neither let our experiences harden us too much, nor our affection and love, soften us too much either.
