The Story Behind the Story about the First Christmas.
Galatians 4:4 (Luke, Matthew and various other Scriptures)
Most Christians believe that all we know about the story is what we read in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and a few other scattered verses. If that is what you also believe, you are missing out as the rest of the story is just as fascinating.
In “The Characters of Christmas,” Pastor Gilmer will give you all the Biblical and historical details about six different people or groups of people, as well as customs of that day. They are the following:
(4) The Wise Men or Magi – Who were they? Where did they come from? How many were there? Why did they travel so far? Why those three gifts? Why didn’t Herod just kill them and be done with it? We will look at all these questions…and answers.
(5) Joseph & Mary – How old were they? Were they married, or just engaged? Why did God choose them? Why were they so poor? We will examine a Hebrew marriage and explain why Mary & Joseph were the scandal of Nazareth; and point out that 30 years later, a vicious rumor about them was still making its rounds. We will also take a look at all the things Mary & Joseph gave up in their lives to raise the Christ Child.
(6) The Shepherds – Why did the angels announce the birth to them first? What did they have to do with it, since they were considered nobodies in their society? Well, ironically, they will explain to us why God had His Son born in a stable.
