Charles Fishman on water, space and achieving big goals

Listen Later

Episode 178 (23 Mar 2022): Charles Fishman is a journalist, author and historian — and he’s joining me today because of his decade of reporting about water, which includes the bestselling book, “The Big Thirst,” which focuses on how people around the world solve their water problems -- or fail to solve them. Charles started work as a reporter for the Washington Post. His most recent book is “One Giant Leap,” about the race to the Moon in the 1960s. In our conversation, he will make a direct connection between flying to the Moon and tackling water and climate issues. Charles grew up in Miami, and now lives in Washington DC — where he has a three-foot-wide creek running through his backyard.

Charles's favorite water tidbit: "When I was in San Pellegrino, in the north near the Italian Alps, I idly asked a question about the bubbles in San Pellegrino water. Turns out, San Pellegrino comes out of the ground “still.” The company owns a spring, with carbonated water, down in Tuscany. San Pellegrino captures that water, removes the CO2, purifies it, concentrates it, puts it in tankers, trucks it 350 miles up to the Alps — where San Pellegrino injects it into the San Pellegrino water coming out of the spring there. You can literally trace the CO2 trail of the CO2 in the Pellegrino water."
