A history, most Queer

Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf

Listen Later

For this week's episode, we are looking at the life of a trans historical figure whose life stretched from the post First World War Berlin, with it rather accepting atmosphere, to the Berlin of Nazi Germany, and then to a city split in two-one half capitalist and under the protection of NATO, to the other half, Communist and under the protection of the USSR. With all of the wild changes, Charlotte was able to carve out a niche for herself and other queer folk to have some semblance of authentic living. This is the first part of her story. The guest speaker is Dr. Erik Huneke. He is a professor at the University of Central Oklahoma and specializes in German history and the history of the Eastern Bloc.
