The holidays loudly remind us that meaningful relationships come with both joy and pain.
Everyone wants the good of relational connection.
Even our best relationships are flawed.
We lack the peace needed for the friction that comes from imperfect relationships.
Christmas is where we try to make life as we wish it would be
Our chase to experience Christmas often leaves us exhausted, stressed, and glad when it’s over.
Christmas isn’t a chase
How do we find the peace needed for the friction of imperfect relationships?
The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them,
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
The first Christmas is God’s undeserved gift of peace to any through Jesus!
PEACE is not the absence of hurt or disappointment
PEACE is where God’s unfailing love defines us
Celebrate
Christmas isn’t a chase to bypass the unavoidable friction of relationships.
