Several leading dignitaries hear Yirmiyahu saying that whoever remains in the city will die by sword, famine, or pestilence and anybody who surrenders to the Chaldeans will live.
They argue to King Tzidkiyahu that he should be put to death because he “weakens the hands of the soldiers and all the people” and that he doesn't care about the welfare of the nation.
King Tzidkiyahu tells them he can't argue and gives them permission.
They seize Yirmiyahu and lower him into a pit of mud using rope and he partially sinks into the mud.
Eved-melech, a senior officer, tells the king that they acted wickedly and that Yirmiyahu is at risk of dying of starvation.
The king says he should take 30 men and take out Yirmiyahu.
Indeed he goes with the men and they give Yirmiyahu worn-out rags to put under his armpits under the rope and they pull him out.
Yirmiyahu then remains in the Courtyard of Confinement.
King Tzidkiyahu summons Yirmiyahu and tells him to tell him the word of G-d and to not withhold anything.
He asks in response that if he answers, wouldn't he be put to death?
Also, he notes that it's worthless because Tzidkiyahu won't listen anyway.
King Tzidkiyahu responds with a swear that he won't put him to death or give him over to people who will.
Yirmiyahu responds that Hashem says he should surrender to the king of Babylonia so that he will survive but if he does not, the city will be burned in fire.
King Tzidkiyahu says he's afraid of the Jews who have deserted him and is worried they will give him over to the Chaldeans.
Yirmiyahu responds that they will not but he needs to surrender, otherwise the well-being of himself and all the women and children of the city are at stake.
Tzidkiyahu tells him to keep the conversation quiet and if people ask what they spoke about, he should say that he was just pleading for his life from the king.
The officers indeed ask Yirmiyahu what they had spoken about and he tells them what the king told him to say.

● This event took place during the reign of king Tzidkiyah.
● At that time it seemed that the Egyptian army was going join forces with Yehudah to defeat the army of Bavel.
● *Note: This was a hopeful sign for King Tzidkiyah.*
● Tzidkiyah sent two messengers to Yirmiyahu asking Yirmiyahu to pray on his behalf.
● Yirmiyahu sent back a prophecy that related that only Hashem can save, and no other.
● Bavel’s army retreated after hearing the possibility that the Egyptian army might fight against them.
● Yirmiyahu fled to the region of Binyamin.
● A guard in Binyamin’s territory accused Yirmiyahu of colluding with Nevuchadnetzar.
● Yirmiyahu denied the accusation.
● Yirmiyahu was beaten and thrown into a pit. *Note: this was considered a very dangerous maximum security jail where the worst criminals were sent.*
● Tzidkiyah eventually sent for Yirmiyahu.
● Yirmiya pleaded for his life and begged not to be returned to the pit.
● Tzidkiyah agreed to the request and kept Yirmiyahu confined to a courtyard with a guard.
● Yirmiyahu was fed a bread daily until there was no more.

● Yirmiyah is instructed by Hashem to write Hashem’s words on a scroll. Rashi, Metzudos, Radak: This was Megilas Eichah.
● Baruch ben Neriah, Yirmiyah’s scribe, writes down Yirmiyah’s prophetic words.
Yirmiyah tells Baruch to read the scroll out loud in the Beis Hamikdash. Perhaps the nation would listen to the message. Note: Yirmiyah was also banned from entering the Beis Hamikdash.
● Baruch carries out Yirmiyah’s orders and catches the attention of a person named Michayhu ben Gemaryahu.
● Michayhu tells the other officers about the message that he had heard at the event that had transpired.
● Baruch is then brought to read the scroll for the officers. He confirms that this was Hashem’s word through Yirmiyah.
● The officers instruct Baruch to go into hiding with Yirmiyah while they read the message to do Teshuvah to King Yehoyakim.
● Some time elapses before the scroll is read to the king. King Yehoyakim tears up the scroll and burned it in the fire pit. But, the royal guards cannot find Yirmiyah and Baruch.
● Hashem instructs Yirmiyah to dictate a new scroll to Baruch. Yirmiyah does so.

Hashem tells Yirmiyahu during the reign of Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu to gather the Reichavim, bring them to the Beis HaMikdash, and offer them wine.
He then states that he followed Hashem's instructions but they declined saying that their ancestor Yonadav ben Reichav instructed them not to drink wine, nor should they build houses or plant seeds or vineyards but rather always sojourn in tents.
They declare that they always obeyed these instructions but now they have come to Yerushalayim because of the invading Babylonian, Chaldean, and Aramean armies.
Hashem again speaks to Yirmiyahu and tells him to tell the nation that they should learn the lesson to listen to Hashem from the Reichavim who obey their ancestor and still don't drink wine yet Hashem sends His messengers all the time telling them to repent and not to worship idolatry but they don't listen.
He says because they have not listened, He's going to send all the evil that He said He would send against them.
Yirmiyahu then tells the Reichavim that since they heeded the commandment of their ancestor, Hashem says that none of their descendants will be cut off.

Yirmiyahu is being detained in the palace of Tzidkiyahu during the Babylonian siege of Yerushalayim for prophesying about the downfall of Yerushalayim.
In the 18th year of Nevuchadnetzar, Hashem tells him that his cousin Chanameil will want to sell his field to him and that he should buy it in order to redeem it.
Yirmiyahu says that his cousin indeed came to him to sell the field so he weighed out money, bought it in front of witnesses, and gave the contract to Baruch ben Neiriah.
He then says that he told Baruch to take the documents, one of which was sealed and one of which was not, and place them into an earthenware vessel so that they can endure for many years and this is to indicate that houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in the land at some point.
He then says that he davened to Hashem saying that He does kindly with thousands, He is great and mighty, and He knows what people deserve and acts accordingly.
He says that it is Hashem Who took them out of Egypt with signs and wonders and brought them to the land of milk and honey, yet the people did not follow His commandments and He therefore brought evil upon them.
He says that the siege has begun and there is famine and pestilence, yet, for some reason, He told him to buy a field.
Hashem responds to him saying that nothing is hidden from Him and indeed the Babylonians will capture the city and the Kasdim (Chaldeans) who are attacking the city along with them will set it on fire and burn it down for the terrible sins of Yisrael and Yehudah who do nothing but anger Him.
He says that they turned their backs on Him, place their idols in the Beis HaMikdash, and sacrifice their children, which is something He never commanded or even contemplated.
Nevertheless, at some point He will gather them back from the lands to which they have been dispersed and they will be a people to Him and will be given a single heart and a single path to fear Him so that things will be good for them and their children.
He says that He will rejoice over them and bestow goodness upon them.
He says that the fields will once again be bought in the land that seems to be desolate and their captivity will be returned.

Yirmiyahu writes a letter from Yerushalayim to everybody who has been exiled to Babylonia by Nevuchadnetzar saying that they should build houses, plant gardens, get married, marry off their children, and continue to multiply.
He tells them to seek the peace of the city in which they live and pray on its behalf so that they can have peace.
He says that Hashem has warned them not to let the prophets in their midst and the magicians delude them for they speak falsehood.
Rather, after 70 years in Babylonia, He will fulfill His promise to return them to Israel.
He says that He has positive plans for them and that at that point, they will follow His ways and pray to Him and He will listen to them.
He will gather the exiles from everywhere they were dispersed to.
He says that the king who currently sits on the throne in Israel (Tzidkiyahu) and those people will suffer the sword, famine, and pestilence and they will become like “detestable figs” for not listening to his word.
He then calls out two false prophets by name, Achav ben Kolayah and Tzidkiyahu ben Maaseiyah, and says he is delivering them into the hand of Nevuchadnetzar and they will be considered a curse due to their adultery and their false prophecy.
He then addresses an antagonist of his, Shemayah HaNechelami, who sent letters to the people in Yerushalayim saying to condemn Yirmiyahu and imprison him for saying it will be a long exile and that they should build houses and plant gardens.
Yirmiyahu says that Hashem says He will deal with him and his descendants and that they would not survive to see the goodness that will befall the Jewish people.
