In which the storm of succession rises as King Panda’s sons, Cetewayo and Umbelazi, summon their followers to quarrel over the throne amidst tense assemblies and bitter confrontations, while the narrator finds himself reluctantly drawn into the dangerous fray. Amidst fierce disputes and shifting loyalties, the shadow of war darkens Zululand, compelling the narrator to choose whether to stand by the old King’s wishes or to seek safety beyond the troubled land.
