Publisher's Summary:
China Bones is the story of a young American Marine in China through the Sino-Japanese War, World War II, and the ultimate fall of Shanghai, to the Communists in 1949. Zack Cameron finds love and fortune in Shanghai, loses his fortune, and survives a brutal Japanese prison camp, only to face even more danger. In a race against time, Zack is forced to put together a desperate treasure hunt amid the confusion of civil war and the Communist takeover of China.
China Bones is also the story of the great city of Shanghai. It begins with the old China - the International Settlement where allies and enemies ruled side by side in a time of uneasy tension, while the very rich, the very poor, soldiers, diplomats, and business tycoons all take part in, or bear witness to, gunboat diplomacy. China Bones guides listeners through how the city suffered under a brutal occupation by the invading Japanese, only to then turn herself over to perhaps the most brutal dictatorship the world has ever known.
Members Reviews:
Very nice novel that blends action with romance
As a retired Marine Mustang officer (who got commissioned from the ranks) I enjoyed this book. I served with some of the tough old Marines who served in China after WW II and before the Communist takeover when I first enlisted and served in 2dMarDivand then 1stMarDiv. They all said service in China was wonderful duty. This book takes off from there and provides a good picture of service there and then takes you through a picture of Marine action in WW II, being a prisoner of the Japanese and their inhuman cruelty and on to the Communist takeover of China. It presents a very good story in novel form while blending in some actual situations. A lot of it is a stretch, especially in the end. But overall it blends a very interesting romance and human loyalty into a very interesting story. I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it.
NO WORDS CAN EXPRESS HOW OUTSTANDING THIS BOOK IS
You do not read this book you experience it as a part of you. You become one of the Characters, you experience the love, the pain, the reality of the situation, and most of all you become part of the story. I hope that the author writes more books on this exciting subject, location, and era of history.
The most realistic and enjoyable book I have read in years.
A great read
If your interested in a book about an old china hand then this is the book for you. My brother served in china after the war, the stories he told we're outstanding .my father's stories about World war one and my stories about Vietnam just couldn't compare .really good book.
Historical fiction at its best
This is a Marines eye view of the Sino-Japanese conflict, followed by the US-Japanese conflict in the Pacific. The characters are well developed in a can't stop reading novel. Well worth a read for anyone interested in good historical fiction.
A love story, a historical book, a war novel.....yes.
Usually when a book attempts to interlace so many things it will lose me in one of the different genres. This book kept me completely engaged and involved in all the different things it had happening. A very good read.
