A new landmark study traced $3.3 trillion in Chinese foreign investment across 161,000 companies in 159 countries and what it found about patent harvesting should concern every Western economy.
The research, published by the US National Bureau of Economic Research, reveals how Chinese state-owned enterprises and private investors have systematically targeted pre-patent, R&D-intensive firms in North America and Europe since 2012. More than $800 billion of that investment flowed through the Cayman Islands alone, obscuring ownership and bypassing standard foreign direct investment reporting. The strategy traces directly to the Made in China 2015 initiative, which directed Chinese firms to acquire and repatriate foreign intellectual property and the data shows it is working.
