How does chiropractic care work?

Chiropractic therapy improves general health and relieves pain by correcting spinal and joint misalignments. Chiropractors think that these misalignments, known as subluxations, might disturb the neurological system, which runs down the spine and regulates communication between the brain and body. When the spine is out of alignment—due to poor posture, injury, or stress—it can cause pain, stiffness, and other problems such as headaches. Chiropractors employ manual procedures, typically spinal adjustments, to treat various conditions. An adjustment is applying controlled, fast stress to a specific joint, which often results in a popping sound as gas bubbles collapse in the synovial fluid. The goal is to restore appropriate alignment, minimize nerve irritation, and improve joint mobility so that the body can heal itself naturally without the use of medicines or surgery. Soft tissue treatment, stretches, and exercises may also be included in sessions to help with rehabilitation and prevention of future problems. For example, a patient with lower back pain may have an adjustment to realign the lumbar spine, followed by strengthening exercises.

Can everyone visit a chiropractor?

Most people can see a chiropractor, however eligibility varies based on personal health issues and needs. Chiropractors treat a wide spectrum of patients, from youngsters with postural concerns to elders with arthritis, by making specific adjustments to alleviate pain and enhance function. Pregnant women frequently benefit from specialist treatments to alleviate back pain, whereas athletes seek chiropractic therapy for injury healing and performance development. Spinal manipulations and therapies are tempting to those seeking non-drug relief for back pain, neck stiffness, or headaches. Certain conditions, however, are contraindicated or demand caution when receiving chiropractic care. Individuals with severe osteoporosis, spinal fractures, or bone cancer should avoid making changes due to the risk of damage. People with blood clotting disorders, recent operations, or inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis may require medical clearance first, as manipulation could exacerbate their condition. Chiropractors evaluate each patient's medical history and may use X-rays to confirm safety before beginning.
