Chiseled Ep 107 - From Career to Calling - Dale Young

Listen Later

Dale Young seemingly made all the right moves in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. He got an advanced education, started working for a defense contractor, and moved to Australia where he was making money and enjoying all the perks. Then one day, during a discussion about taxes with colleagues, he realized he was working at a job, not a career, and he most certainly was not following a calling.

So, he mustered up some courage and organized a plan to change his life.

But nothing came quickly. He moved back to the United States in 1994 and took a tech job. He then got involved in another computer consulting company before moving to a start-up in 2000.

"Can you say not a good idea?" he joked.

It wasn't until 2007 that Dale started investigating life coaching. And it was still another four years before he found the type of coaching he wanted to do — Christian-based coaching. He took an introductory seminar with the "father of Christian coaching," Christopher McCluskey, and he was off to the races.

"I loved it, and it was like OK, this really feels like I've actually set foot on the path and I'm about to head down the path," he said.

Since then, Dale has studied numerous coaching programs, worked with many mentors, and received many revelations to infuse the spiritual into his coaching programs.

"With Christian coaching what we say is we're not facilitating that dialogue between yourself and (the coach), we're facilitating a dialogue between the client and the holy spirit and we're with the holy spirit as well, so we have a little triangle going on," he said.

Dale is a member of the International Coaching Federation, has co-authored two books (including Next Level Your Life, which I too co-authored), and participates in Masterminds on Christian coaching that have helped him develop a unique style of coaching built on combining identity, community, and calling, or what Dale describes as the who, where, and why of one's own path.

Dale also says he received a "God download" — a vision of how to build a coaching program. His "four keys to your calling" method focuses on what provides impact, how to identify strengths, what makes your heart cry, and what the desires of your heart are.

Taking a long, circuitous path, Dale finally heard his calling. He is now eager to help Christians who want to join his community and discover theirs. He offers his contact information at the end of the podcast for anyone who wants to learn more. I hope you enjoy our conversation on this week's Chiseled.
