I went back to work feeling lighter than I had in years. Four months off, a plan finally defined, and for the first time in more than a decade, a real sense of direction. I just had to get through the next few months of saving, networking, and telling everyone I knew: Paris is the goal.
Then I had a call with my manager on my first day back.
“There’s no easy way to say this, but based on the state of the business, we’ve decided to separate.”
Episode two is about the seven minutes that undid my plan, and the identity crisis hiding underneath a layoff I never saw coming. It’s about what happens when the thing you’ve used to define yourself for 20 years disappears overnight, and the slower, less linear choice of what to do next.

Next time: the two months in Paris that tested everything, and what the loneliest parts of it taught me.

I moved to New York at 22 and spent nearly 20 years becoming myself there. The career, the nightlife, the friendships, the city itself contributed to who I am. And then, slowly, it stopped fitting. Episode one is about loving a place and outgrowing it at the same time, and the phone call that changed the plan.
“There was this quiet, stubborn sense that I was supposed to be somewhere else.”
In this episode I talk about New York in the late 2000s (before Instagram), a fulfilling life and career that still left me restless, the sabbatical I’d been planning for years, the call at work that blew everything up, and what choosing forward means.
