1864-1942: The penny was mostly 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc (bronze composition).

1943: Due to wartime copper shortages, pennies were made of zinc-coated steel (Steel Pennies). This change was reversed in 1944.

1944-1982: The penny returned to being mostly 95% copper, with minor changes in alloy content.

1982-Present: The penny was changed to 97.5% zinc with a thin copper plating to reduce costs. Some 1982 pennies were made of both the old (copper) and new (zinc) composition.
