Chris Cahill: Government must replace mental health worker scheme

Listen Later

The Police Association is calling for the Government to urgently replace a scheme which would have sent mental health workers to crisis callouts.
The Government's re-allocated the $8 million funding for the plan, which was proposed under National.
It was intended to ease the strain on emergency services dealing with a growing number of people who need emergency help, rather than a police response.
The Police Association says the issue can't be made political and must be addressed.
President Chris Cahill told Mike Hosking people suffering from mental health issues often don't need - or want to see - police.
"These people need proper health care, they need support, and that isn't police officers, that's mental health experts."
