Police have learned lessons, and taken action, after an officer tasered a goat to the point it had to be put down.
The feral goat was tasered 13 times at a property in Oamaru.
The Police Association have accepted a rule change, banning Police from tasering escaped animals unless they are attacking a person.
But president Chris Cahill told Mike Hosking the officer made the right call, in the circumstances.
"I actually highlight this with recruits. You're going to be sent to some crazy situations where your going to have to make a decision, and if you get it wrong or things don't turn out the way you had planned, you can guarantee that people are going to judge you."
Cahill says police have limited options for dealing with escaped animals.
"The option that they had was to shoot the goat, but they couldn't do it because of the confined space, and also it was a built up area and if the bullet went through the wall it could have gone anywhere."
