I couldn't live with an iPhone Duo. There's no dedicated telephoto lens, it's missing a LiDAR scanner, and the software looks tacked on. I could look at it and go, that's not for me. I also wrote about ChatGPT signing real cartoonists' names, a propane airship, a startup's claim its AI passed as human, New York's lawsuit over a TikTok safety button, Googlebook OS on a Mac, a hand-drawn smart home dashboard, a coffee maker that uploaded a terabyte, OpenAI's agents on Wikimedia's wikis, a printed calculator, Linux's GPU driver on an iPad, the NBA's chipped ball, PS2 games in a browser, hacked supermarket fridges and Intel's missing instruction. Then Meta's Muse, which is what Gemini and Siri should have been. It works that well.

The report is that Apple is about to announce its first smart home hub with a screen, powered by Siri. Meh. One of the reasons I switched to Android wholesale was because of Siri. If the software is not great on an older device, what makes you think it's going to work better on faster hardware? Then let's rewind to 1985, back when a Commodore 64 woke up speaking BASIC and saving 36K to tape took about 18 minutes, and ask what your computer was doing all day. Well, first, you probably didn't have one. I also wrote about the Inquirer's Scrape, Tippett Studio's old discs, and Doom running in SQL. There was something to be said about not always being online. I can't believe I just admitted that.

It's OK to walk around with a phone camera facing out, but heaven forbid you got it on your face. I don't believe smart glasses will be socially acceptable until Apple does it, and to me, that's a little disappointing. It's not a tech reviewer's job to sell you a product. If they're selling you a product, they're marketing it. Google used to be a place where you could search for something, get a list of results, click the first one, and then you were done. I don't know where that Google is anymore. And the Googlebook? I'm the target customer, but I still don't want one. At least, the hardware. Today.

Criticism is not necessarily hate

I'm old enough to remember four TV channels and a dial, and I think humanity's been destroying humanity with technology since technology existed. Nobody fights the AI model wars the way we fought the OS wars, though.

iPhones get faster every year and the software doesn't get better. I said it while peeling carrots, again with Matt about Liquid Glass, and again in my ranking of phone annoyances. Then there's the report that Apple is paying creators, the Googlebook and who it's for, and a wild rumor that I hate Apple. Criticism is not necessarily hate.

And I've been the world's worst tech content creator since 1996.

I'm not everybody else.
