Erika Jackson sits down with Chris Sankey, a physician and hospitalist at Yale New Haven Hospital. Chris shares his deeply personal journey in medicine, which he has always considered a calling, inspired in part by his grandfather who was also a physician. He recounts how, after over a decade of practicing medicine, he experienced professional burnout that manifested in a very specific and dangerous way for a doctor: a loss of curiosity. This came to a head during a challenging case with a very sick patient, which served as a profound wake-up call that he needed to make a change.
Chris discusses his path to healing and rediscovery through coaching, which began after attending a session on physician coaching at a national medical meeting. He explains how he initially viewed coaching as just another skill to add to his toolkit but soon realized its transformative power. He describes how adopting a coaching mindset has not only helped heal the "scar" left by burnout but has permeated every aspect of his life, making him a different and better physician, father, and husband. Tune in to hear how Chris is now integrating these skills to support medical students and other clinicians, aiming to help them reconnect with their own values and purpose to combat the high rates of burnout in the medical field.
