Christ Does Do God's Will

Listen Later

Christ had said to God in olden times, "I delight to do Thy will!" That is, Christ delighted to come in human flesh, to sacrifice Himself, to take away our sin, and to shut down the animal sacrifices that God took no delight in. Christ Himself expressed His desire to do God's will during His earthly ministry. Indeed, Jesus told His disciples that to do God's will was like food and drink to Him! Christ fed upon it, and drew strength from obeying His Father. In John 6, Christ explicitly stated the will of the Father which He would surely accomplish: it was to save every single person given to Him by His Father, and lose not a one of us! He told us that He came down to earth to do His Father's will, and not His Own will. It is important to recognize the congruence of the two statements of God's will which Christ delights to do. In these texts, the delightful will of God is expressed in terms of the means Christ must use to accomplish God's will. In John 6, God's will is stated in terms of its purpose and result: to save all of His people that He gives to Christ unto everlasting life. If Christ was to fulfill the will as stated in John 6, to save everyone given to Him by God, then He must delight to do the will expressed in Hebrews 10, that He sacrifice Himself as God's Lamb, and shut down the Old Testament animal sacrifices that could never save anybody. When Jesus satisfied the will of God in dying to save us from our sin, He had in mind the same people that God gave Him!
